Color Smart Ground Rods & Accessories FAQ

The nVent Color Smart Ground Rod System is designed to make ground rod and accessory selection faster, easier and more intuitive. By pairing color-coded copper bonded ground rods with corresponding accessories and packaging labels, the system helps distributors, contractors and internal teams quickly identify compatible grounding components while maintaining existing part numbers, codes, quantities and product performance.

Q: What is the Color Smart Ground Rod System and its benefits?

A: The nVent ERICO Color Smart Ground Rod System uses functional color cues to help customers see the right solution faster, choose compatible products with confidence and install with less guesswork. It is intended to simplify product selection and create a clearer experience for distributors and installing contractors.
Q: Are all ground rods and accessories being color coded?
A: At this time, only copper bonded ground rods will be color coded. Galvanized, stainless steel and solid copper ground rods are not included in this launch. Only the nVent ERICO Hammerlock Ground Clamps will be color coded. The acorn and coupler accessories will not be color-coded.
Q: What is the color coding system for the ground rods and accessories?

Q: Why were the colors chosen?
A: The colors were selected using color psychology methodology, with the goal of choosing colors that draw excitement, build trust and highlight quality.

Q: What diameter copper bonded ground rods are color coded?
A: nVent selected its most popular copper bonded ground rod sizes for color coding: 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4" diameter ground rods.
Q: Are any copper bonded ground rods not color coded?
A: Yes. 1" diameter copper bonded ground rods, as well as 12' and 15' long copper bonded ground rods of any diameter, are not being color coded due to market relevance and future plans to discontinue certain SKUs.
Q: Will nVent still offer unpainted copper bonded ground rods?
A: Copper bonded ground rods in 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4" diameters, with lengths from 3' to 10', will be painted as part of the color coding process. All other ground rods will remain unpainted.
Q: Will imported copper bonded ground rods be color coded?
A: Yes. All domestic and imported copper bonded ground rods processed in Aberdeen will be painted.
Q: Will the nVent copper bonded ground rods still be BABA compliant?
A: Yes, copper bonded ground rods made in Aberdeen will still be BABA compliant. The paint does not disqualify the ground rods from compliance and acceptance.

Q: Which accessories are physically painted versus identified through packaging?
A: All Hammerlock for copper bonded ground rod parts are the accessories that will be painted. Acorn clamps and couplers will be identified through color-coded package labels rather than changes to the physical part.
Q: Will accessory box label packaging be color coded?
A: All Hammerlock for copper bonded ground rods, acorn clamp and coupler boxes will include color-coded labels.
Q: Why will the accessory packaging label be color-coded?
A: The color-coded labels are an enhancement to the existing product offering for quick and easy identification. No changes are being made to the physical accessory parts, except for painted Hammerlock for copper bonded ground rods.
Q: Some acorn clamp products are range taking. How did nVent pick the color to use?
A: The color was selected based on the primary application of the acorn clamp. For example, CP34 is yellow because its primary application is for 3/4" ground rods, even though the clamp can also be used with 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4" ground rods.
Q: Why are Hammerlocks being color-coded and not other accessories?
A: To ensure pricing competitiveness, nVent chose the ERICO Hammerlock ground clamps to be color-coded alongside the corresponding ground rods.
Q: Why are there no Hammerlocks for 3/8" ground rods?
A: 3/8" ground rods are generally less common in the market, and there hasn’t been demand for a ground rod clamp with a permanent connection for that size.

Q: Will copper bonded ground rod part numbers change as a result of color coding?
A: No. There will be no change to existing copper bonded ground rod part numbers as a result of adding color coding.
Q: Will distributors need to update their systems for new part numbers?
A: No. There is no change to existing copper bonded ground rod and accessories part numbers. However, distributors may need updated product content, images or descriptions to reflect the color-coded system on in their websites.
Q: Will customers be able to choose between color-coded and non-color-coded inventory?
A: No. All copper coded ground rods will be color-coded with the exception of the 1" diameter, 12’ and 15’ long copper bonded ground rods of any diameter. The Hammerlock accessories will also be color coded.
Q: Will there be any changes to UPC or GTIN codes?
A: No. All applicable agency product codes will remain unchanged.
Q: Will the cost or sale price of ground rods increase as a result of color coding?
A: No. There will be no price change as a direct result of the color coding process. Any price changes would be directly related to raw material cost fluctuations.
Q: Will the bundle sizes change?
A: No. Ground rod bundle sizes will not change as part of the color coding project.
Q: Will box or bundle quantities change?
A: No. Box quantities will remain the same regardless of any color being added to the part or label.

Q: Will the painting process create a bottleneck or cause delays in ground rod production?
A: No. The painting equipment is an inline system. nVent also upgraded its wrapping machine, and the net system throughput is 192 bundles per hour, painted and wrapped, which is an improvement over the current process.
Q: Will the paint affect the ability of the ground rod to conduct electricity?
A: No. Electrical testing was performed in accordance with the UL 467 standard, with passing results. The paint had no adverse effect on the current carrying ability of the ground rod.
Q: Will the paint interfere with couplers or connectors?
A: No. The coating of paint is thin enough that it will not interfere with threaded or press-fit couplers or connectors.

Q: Are we accepting returns of product that is not color coded?
A: No. Existing non-color coded inventory remains fully functional and sellable. The color coded system is an enhancement designed to simplify identification and product selection, but it does not change the performance or compliance of existing copper bonded ground rods and accessories.
