Lightning Protection Design Services FAQ

What standards does nVent ERICO follow when designing lightning protection (LP) systems?

We design to most globally recognized standards for terminal placement and system design and adjust to the individual project needs. Typically, those standards include designing systems to comply with IEC 62305, NFPA 780, UL 96A, LPI 175 or NF C 17-102 for most applications, and IEEE 998 for substation applications.

What nVent ERICO lightning protection system is best suited for my project?

We’re here to help! The goal of nVent ERICO Application Engineering is to utilize a best practice approach for a given application to meet project specifications while optimizing air terminal placement. This may result in a conventional LP system, a non-conventional LP system or potentially a hybrid design utilizing components of each.

What protection level is preferred?

The nVent ERICO Application Engineering team can assist you in performing a Lightning Protection Risk Assessment for your project. These results help determine the appropriate level of protection for an individual project based on location, the type of building/application and various other parameters.

How do I submit a request for LP design?

Tell us about your project below and an nVent ERICO lightning protection specialists will contact you to get started!

What about grounding system design assistance?

Soil resistivity is a must to accurately size a grounding system. However, estimation of the soil resistivity can be done based on the nature of the soil, whether it is plain soil, rock, sand, sea water or clay, etc. nVent ERICO Applications Engineers are available to help with estimation or assist with soil resistivity measurement results.

What is included in the design if/when competed by the nVent ERICO design?

Once we finish your design we will provide a complete design package including; Revit project file, submittal drawing, installation details, project BOM and product cut sheets.

Is surge protection included in a LP system design?

For a complete protection scheme surge protective devices should be installed at service entrances, branch circuits, and data/communication systems. If requested, nVent ERICO can provide our recommended products along with an installation scheme in a separate report.

What information is required to complete a lightning protection design?

With our new LPSD (Lightning Protection System Designer) 4.0 software, the best way for us to get started on your project is by sharing your .rvt project file. Alternatively, we can create a basic model from architectural roof plans and elevations. Additional information is always helpful and required in some cases, like site plans, project specifications, and hazardous zone information (if applicable).
